Penalty rates will change in the latter part of this year as a result of a 2017 Fair Work Commission decision. The changes affect those covered by the General Retail, Fast Food, Restaurant, Pharmacy, and Hospitality Industry Awards, but don’t impact those employed under an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement.
Under the new changes, Sunday and Public Holiday penalty rates have been reduced by 10-15% with changes expected to continue into 2020. The amendments were designed to encourage retailers to hire more staff.
